In the last week, Citrix has released updated versions of many of the products in its portfolio. This includes, XenApp, XenDesktop, XenServer, Provisioning Server, StoreFront, User Profile Manager, Receiver, VDI-in-a-Box, and more! Below is a breakdown of each new product version and the highlights in the new version:

XenApp / XenDesktop - I combined these because as you likely already know, the products have been consolidated to XenDesktop 7. This consolidation allows for shared management between XenDesktop and XenApp, which has now been named XenDesktop 7 App Edition. Highlights:

  • Windows 8 and Windows 2012 support
  • Better HDX multimedia capabilities
  • IMA (Independent Management Architecture) is officially dead. FMA (Flexcast Management Architecture) is now the standard for RDS and VDI, and the architecture is similar to XenDesktop 5.6.
  • EdgeSight agent built into the VDA which gets installed with RDS and/or VDI
  • Desktop Director provides single pane of glass for RDS and VDI workloads, including health and performance information
  • App-DNA now included with Platinum licensing (lite version)
  • IPv6 support
  • MCS for RDS workloads
  • Multi-touch support

XenServer 6.2 - XenServer is officially open source with this release. All features are now available for free, including HA, StorageLink, and all the features that previously came with the Platinum version of XenServer. Highlights:

  • All features available for free
  • Support and maintenance now licensed per-socket instead of per-server
  • Support for Windows 8 and Windows 2012

Provisioning Server 7 - Highlights:

    • User favorites are stored locally and synchronized between all StoreFront servers

  • Better support for High Availability and Multi-Site configurations

User Profile Manager 5 - Highlights:

  • Streamlined configuration - In XenDesktop, supports auto-configuration for use with non-peristent and Personal vDisk. Chooses the ideal settings based on the environment aut0matically
  • No longer leveraging the Windows journal to track change. Now uses proprietary database which improves the process
  • Support for App-V

Receiver 4 - Support for new XenDesktop 7 features. Also:

  • Smart card support
  • Support for HDX Insight to send additional statistics
  • H.264 decoding which improves video and graphics applications
  • XD7 features such as

    • Windows Media client-side content fetching
    • Multicast support
    • Client folder redirection
    • Local App Access
    • Support for IPv6 connections

VDI-in-a-Box 5.3 - Highlights:

  • Windows 8 support
  • Better SSL certificate installation through wizards
  • Integration with XenMobile
