Here are some of the technology stories that caught our eye today:

Michael Muchmore at PCMag spent some time with the Windows 8.1 preview announced at Microsoft Build yesterday, detailing new features and improvements.

Microsoft also unveiled preview versions of Visual Studio 2013 and the latest version of the .NET Framework at its Build conference yesterday. The company also released an update to Visual Studio 2012.

According to McAfee’s Mobile Security Consumer Trends Report, more cybercriminals are abusing mobile app permissions for “free” apps to commit fraud and install malware.

EMC’s latest update for Syncplicity now adds stricter controls for the distribution of corporate data, new apps for iOS and Android, and tighter integration with Active Directory.
