Here are some of the technology stories that caught our eye this week: On Monday, many small business websites were down for several hours after Go Daddy experienced a service outage. Although the hacker group Anonymous initially claimed credit, Go Daddy’s CEO blamed the outage on a networking issue. As a result, the company offered users one month of free service. JPMorgan lowered their forecast for 2012 Tech Spending earlier today. http://news.investors.com/technology/091012-625120-it-spending-forecast-cut.htm?ven=yahoocp,yahoo PC spending took a particular beating. They are now predicting a 2.3% fall (to $224 Billion) from a previous expectation of a small amount of growth (0.9%). Server revenue is also predicted to fall 1.4% to 52 Billion. VMware recently announced yet another change in their licensing model; and happily it’s a return to socket-based licensing as opposed to the vRAM entitlement model that was adopted in 2011. Although statements vary as to the reasons for the return to the old model, it seems pretty clear that competition from Microsoft’s new version of Hyper-V was part of the decision; Microsoft was clearly targeting VMware’s licensing schema in their push for Enterprise adoption of their hypervisor platform.
