Microsoft made Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) Hybrid generally available on September 1, 2026. It lets you run desktop hosts in your own datacenter while Microsoft manages the AVD service in Azure. That’s good news if data residency, latency, or compliance rules have kept you off cloud-hosted AVD.
Key Benefits
- Microsoft still runs the core service. You don’t manage a connection broker or gateway.
- Use the hardware you already have. Works with your own hypervisor or dedicated physical servers.
- Better fit for compliance needs. Keep sensitive data and workloads on-site.
- One consistent app for users. The Windows App works the same across AVD, AVD Hybrid, and Windows 365.
Requirements
- Azure Arc is required. Every on-prem host must be Arc-enabled.
- Only certain operating systems qualify. Windows Server or Windows 10/11 Enterprise. No multi-session support for Windows 10/11.
- You manage the hypervisor and network. Microsoft doesn’t touch either one.
- Licensing depends on the OS. Windows Server needs RDS CALs. Windows Enterprise needs Microsoft 365 or VDA licensing.
Gotchas
- No autoscale or auto power management. You turn VMs on and off yourself.
- No simplified host configuration tool. You manage updates manually or with scripts.
- No personal devices allowed. Only dedicated physical servers count as valid hosts.
- You own the full lifecycle. Patching, capacity, and recovery are on your team, not Microsoft's.
Bottom Line
AVD Hybrid is a solid fit if you need Azure’s management tools but must keep session hosts on-site. It’s also a good choice if you want to put your existing on-prem hardware to use running VDI. Just remember you’re trading cloud automation for more hands-on infrastructure work.
